White Distilled Vinegar
The ultimate all-purpose eco cleaner. Undiluted, it disinfects and cuts through grease, soap scum, and mineral deposits. Diluted 1:1 with water, it's safe for most hard surfaces including glass, tile, and countertops.
What it does well: Dissolves calcium and limescale (faucets, showerheads), degreases stovetops, cleans glass streak-free, and deodorizes. Its acidity kills many common bacteria and mold spores.
Avoid on: Natural stone (marble, granite), cast iron, and unsealed hardwood floors. Acid etches these surfaces over time.
Baking Soda (Sodium Bicarbonate)
A mild abrasive and natural deodorizer. It lifts stains, absorbs odors, and scrubs without scratching. Mixed into a paste with a little water or dish soap, it becomes a powerful, gentle scrub for sinks, tubs, and ovens.
What it does well: Scrubs porcelain sinks and tubs without scratching, absorbs refrigerator and carpet odors, cleans the inside of ovens (apply overnight, scrub in the morning), and neutralizes acidic odors.
Pro tip: Combine baking soda and vinegar for a foaming reaction that helps lift grime in drains and grout lines. Let it foam for 5 minutes, then scrub and rinse.
Castile Soap
Made from plant-based oils (traditionally olive oil), castile soap is a concentrated, biodegradable, and genuinely non-toxic surfactant. A small amount goes a long way. Dr. Bronner's is the most widely available brand, but any pure castile soap works.
What it does well: Cuts grease on dishes, cleans floors, washes produce, and can be diluted for an all-purpose spray. It's completely safe for kids and pets once diluted, and rinses without leaving residue.
Dilution guide for a spray bottle: Mix 1 tablespoon castile soap per 1 quart of water. Add 10 drops of lemon or lavender essential oil if you want a light scent.
Hydrogen Peroxide (3%)
The standard 3% hydrogen peroxide from the drugstore is an effective, non-toxic disinfectant. It kills bacteria, viruses, and mold spores through oxidation, then breaks down harmlessly into water and oxygen.
What it does well: Disinfects cutting boards, toilet seats, sinks, and countertops. Removes mold stains from grout and caulk. Whitens grout naturally without bleach. Can be used directly from the bottle or in a spray bottle.
Note: Don't mix hydrogen peroxide with vinegar in the same bottle — combined, they form peracetic acid, which is corrosive. Use them separately: spray one, wipe, then apply the other.
Microfiber Cloths
Not a chemical — but arguably the most important eco-friendly cleaning tool you can own. High-quality microfiber cloths can clean most surfaces effectively with just water, dramatically reducing your reliance on any cleaning product at all.
What they do well: Microfiber's tiny fibers physically trap and remove bacteria, dust, and grease at the microscopic level. They clean glass, stainless steel, and mirrors without streaks, and last hundreds of wash cycles.
Look for cloths with a weave density of at least 200,000 fibers per square inch (often labeled as "professional grade"). Cheap microfiber cloths push dirt around rather than trapping it.
